About

T
his website is the home of the Derry Branch of The School of Philosophy and Economic Science. For a map click here. The School has branches all over Ireland including Letterkenny, Sligo, Belfast, Galway, Limerick, Cork, Tralee, Waterford, Naas, Dundalk, Drogheda, and Dublin. Please see also Practicalphilosophy.ie. Practical Philosophy shows that there is an underlying unity to everything and that this holds the key to a happy, fulfilling, and useful life.

The School of Philosophy & Economic Science

The origins of the school in Ireland go back to a small group of people who came together during the late sixties sharing a common interest in the fundamental questions of human existence and creation. The study of the great philosophies and ancient teachings naturally followed. Contact was made with the School of Economic Science in London which was engaged in similar studies and this led to an affiliated school in Ireland being established.

Regular classes in Philosophy were then offered to the public. Today over 1,500 people attend the school on a weekly basis. While practical philosophy plays the major part in the school's work other groups have been formed to study Plato, Sanskrit, Economics and Parenting. Please see also schooleconomicscience.org and philosophycourse.com. In 1985 John Scottus School was founded for boys and girls to offer traditional education grounded in philosophy. Please see www.johnscottus.ie The School of Philosophy & Economic Science is a voluntary association with charitable status. Its tutors are all students of the school who have studied their subject for many years.

Townley Hall is the residential venue for study weekends and for the wonderful Art In Action weekend at the beginning of June. Townley Hall is a magnificent Georgian mansion built just over 200 years ago on a hilltop setting. Today it is surrounded by 60 acres of rolling parkland overlooking the Boyne Valley, very close to the site of the famous battle. The location is strikingly beautiful and peaceful. The House is an architectural jewel. It is renowned for its exquisite interior, wonderful proportions, the quality of the materials and craftsmanship used in its construction and, in particular, its magnificent staircase. Please see also www.townleyhall.ie

The school is staffed and cared for almost entirely on a voluntary basis, without remuneration, by the school's own students. Registered Charity Number CHY 5791.
