hank you for visiting Derry Wisdom - website of the Derry-Londonderry branch of the School of Practical Philosophy. Derry Wisdom - Practical Philosophy is for all who are interested in how we can: Engage fully in this life and yet be in peace and harmony, freedom and bliss. It is Practical Philosophy in Action! Many people trek through life without ever asking a serious question, yet almost everyone wants to be happy, wants a life that satisfies, wishes to enjoy a fulfilling life.

"Give thyself time to learn something new and good, and cease to be whirled around." Marcus Aurelius (AD 121 - 180).
Practical Philosophy is not academic philosophy. There are no theoretical exams. There are no certificates! Practical Philosophy is NOT about the history of philosophy or about names and dates of dead people or about academic discussions comparing one philosopher's theory
against another's.
Philosophy means ‘love of wisdom'
So what is Wisdom? Wisdom is the knowledge, the set of skills, that allows us to enjoy all of the above, regardless of the inevitable ups and downs that the ever changing circumstances of Life might throw at us. So what is Practical? Practical means realistic; useful; no-nonsense. So Practical Philosophy means discovering and practicing a realistic, useful, no-nonsense set of skills that allows us to enjoy a life that is happy; a life that satisfies; a life that achieves something fulfilling, - regardless of circumstances.
Derry wisdom
Derry wisdom is regarded as robust and humorous; many a Derry mother has had to tell her children at some stage in their upbringing to: "Wise Up !" Another familiar example of great local Derry practical philosophy is the advice to: "Catch yourself on!" In truth, this is very similar to the sign over the entrance to the Oracle at Delphi in Ancient Greece: "Know thyself." Or, perhaps even as expressed by William Shakespeare:

"This above all, to thine own self be true; And it must follow, as night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man." William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616).
